The vineyards of this region are on the southern slopes of the Vértes and Velence Hills, on the Etyek plateau, on the favourable side of the Zsámbék basin, on the south-western side of the Buda Hills and on the Pilis and Dunazug Ridges. Since 1998, the region has been divided into two districts; the Buda areas were joined to the Etyek Wine Region, which has a longer history of wine growing.
Records referring to grapes and wine production in Etyek date from the 18th century. As in a number of other places in the country, the Germans who were repeatedly settled here brought significant development to wine production, especially from the middle of the 19th century.
Due to the soil which contains lime and to the traditional types of local grape the Etyek Wine Region began to produce the basic ingredients for sparkling wines at the turn of the 20th century, including the famed Törley.
Today there are some five hundred wine cellars here, two rows of them being protected buildings. The characteristic wines of the region are Rhein Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Szürkebarát, Zenith, Királyleányka, Chardonnay, Green Veltelini, Zengő, and Zefír.
