Somló hill, the remains of a former volcano, is on highway 8. This is the country’s smallest wine region, with only 500 hectares. It is divided into two districts, the Kissomló – Sághegy district with 5 vineyards, and the Somló Region with 4. The history of this wine region also goes back to ancient times, when probably the Celts and the Romans cultivated the grape.
The golden age of wine here was during the 18th century when the wines of Somló were the favourites of the Habsburgs and the contemporary aristocracy. This is the period when the “honeymoon wine” got its name. According to legend, on the orders of Maria Theresa, young Habsburg princes had to drink a glass of Somló wine on their wedding night in in order to protect their manhood and to ensure male progeny.
You can discover the historic Somló wine region on four characteristic tours (Saint Margaret Wine Tour, Saint Ilona Wine Tour, Hegykút Tour, Saint Martin Wine Tour). They all lead to Somló Castle and offer a comprehensive programme of events. These include wine tasting, meals including local gastronomic specialities, museum visits.
Accommodations can also be arranged. On the Hegykút Tour the Inhauser wine house offers the unforgettable event of the “csacsagolás”. This is a donkey ride to the castle where 6 donkeys carry visitors up to the castle.
