Ászár-Neszmély Wine Region

The history of the Ászár – Neszmély Wine Region, and of wine growing in the area, goes back more than 2000 years. The Roman Empire began to expand northwards from its South Pannonia holdings and brought its wine culture with it.

The Magyar Conquest of Hungary and the founding of the country again made wine growing flourish in the region. With only slight exaggeration we can say that this was a golden age here, for in the Árpád era the government of the country was centred on the area. Esztergom was the capital and for the royals the grape and all types of wine were indispensable requirements. By the 14th century the regional wines were already mentioned among their favourite drinks

.After the Turks were driven out of Hungary, wine production here witnessed a boom and the later revolutions also helped. During the ‘’kuruc’’ (17th century revolutionaries) wars, the troops carried with them large amounts of wine, which naturally encouraged production.

Only ten percent of the grapes made into wine in the Ászár – Neszmély Wine Area are grown here, the other ninety percent is brought in from the other 12 famous wine growing regions of Hungary. The location of the markets will vary according to where the best quality grapes can be found.

The varieties of grapes grown in the region are Rhine Reisling, Királyleányka, Italian Reisling, Green Veltelini, Rizlingszilváni, Muscat Ottonel, Chardonnary, Leányka.
